The Thule Aion is for people who don't want to look like they're travelling
There's a particular look to travel gear. Loops, straps, technical webbing, a colour scheme that says "I am on my way to a mountain." It's fine on a mountain. It's less fine when you're walking into a hotel lobby or meeting a friend for dinner on the first night.
The Aion is the counter-proposal. It has a clean, understated design in a water-resistant waxed-canvas-feeling fabric that reads as a nice bag rather than expedition equipment. And underneath that, it's a fully-equipped 40L carry-on format doing all the real work.
Packing is suitcase-style, which I'll never stop recommending for travel. The main compartment opens wide so you're arranging things in a flat rectangle rather than dropping them down a chute. Internal compression holds it all in place, so nothing rearranges itself while the bag is being flung about in an overhead bin.
The organization is thoughtful in a way I appreciate as someone who loses things. Padded laptop and tablet compartment for the work half of your trip. Secure small-item storage for the passport, cards and keys ā the things you touch most often and can least afford to misplace. And a removable roll-top TPU pouch, which is my favourite feature here: it's the designated home for wet swimwear, damp gym clothes, or anything you don't want touching the rest of your bag. Take it out, rinse it, put it back.
For transit, there's a luggage pass-through so it rides your roller through a long terminal, and stowable backpack straps that zip away when you want the silhouette to be smooth. That last one is also practical protection ā tucked straps don't get caught in a baggage system.
A quick honest note: waxed-look fabrics are water-resistant, not waterproof, and they show wear over time. Some people love that patina, some don't. Worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
